Marco Polo

... is presumed to have been born in Venice. According to Wikipedia, he was "born in 1254 in the Republic of Venice. His exact date and place of birth are archivally unknown."

The Republic of Venice included extensive territory around the head of the Adriatic Sea, and along its north-eastern coast, including parts of modern Croatia and Greece - as well as Crete, Cyprus and various smaller islands.

When Marco Polo is described as a Venetian merchant and traveller (or whatever), it doesn't necessarily mean that he was born in the city of Venice - or even that he was a native of that city.
